BLANKETS & THROWS

Inspired by historical 19th-century coverlet patterns (using Overshot and Summer & Winter designs), these pieces use all-cotton or cotton/wool blends. Limited editions also available in Peruvian Alpaca fibre. They range from baby coverlets and cozy throws to large blankets.

PERUVIAN ALPACA SCARVES

These beautiful scarves are woven with fibre of alpacas - which are bred, sheared, and hand-spun by Quechua women in the highlands of the Peruvian Andes. The undyed fibre uses some of the 22 natural colour variations of Suri and Huacaya alpacas.

All weavings are handwoven and one-of-a-kind, using natural fibres.

ABOUT US

THE STUDIO

B.A. Weaving Studio is located in the heart of the Broughton Archipelago, on Gilford Island, near the community of Echo Bay, BC.

Built by hand in 2012, it is completely off-grid, with plenty of natural light, solar power for electricity, and a wood stove that provides heat and dries the textiles. Even the bobbin-winder is treadle-powered!

The studio has 3 completely hand-operated floor looms, including a 45-inch 4-harness loom, a 46-inch antique Oregon Trail loom, and a 60-inch 14-harness 14-treadle LeClerc loom.

OUR STORY

Handweaving has been a tradition in our families for 9 generations and across 4 continents - from Marka’s flax-weavers of 17th-century Wales, to Brent’s Swedish grandmother.

Our weavings range from Brent’s traditional, historical pieces to Marka’s original one-of-a-kind creations. Using all-natural fibres – cotton, wool, linen & alpaca – we weave on completely hand-operated looms. The weaving studio is off-grid, far away from the buzz of the world, and resonates with our own values of slow living, sustainability, and process.

Through the use of Peruvian Alpaca, and by designating a significant portion of sales to Mosqoy, we support Mosqoy’s fair-trade principles, and give back to the incredible weaving traditions of Peru. For more information, please go to www.mosqoy.org.

Feel free to spend some time in the on-line store, as it represents our weavings past and present. We are open to custom orders, so let us know if you see something of interest that is out of stock. If you are in the area, our weavings can also be seen exclusively at West Coast Community Craft Shop in Port Hardy, BC.

We hope you enjoy these unique heirloom pieces as much as we enjoy creating them. We strive to create lasting works that can be passed down in your family for generations to come.

Testimonials

“The table runner we got from BA Weaving is beautiful! The colour, texture, size and pattern is all we hoped it would be. It lives on the table year-round and is a regular conversation piece.”

— P. A.

"This blanket is gorgeous - the colours, the design, the soft texture, everything is perfect. The item came quickly, beautifully wrapped, and it was more lovely than I'd dared hope :) Now it's on an antique daybed in my home and I curl under it to read. I'll definitely order again from BA Weaving Studio."

Giving Back

GIVING BACK

B.A. Weaving Studio is proud to support Mosqoy, a grassroots, charitable organization based in Victoria, British Columbia. Founded in 2006, Mosqoy mitigates adverse effects of unsustainable tourism and development in the Peruvian Andes by fostering economic and educational opportunities for remote Indigenous Quechua communities.

An integral part of Mosqoy’s mission is their social enterprise, Mosqoy Peruvian Textiles, which works with Quechua weavers to keep their art and culture alive through the revitalization of authentic handwoven textiles that use natural fibres and dyes.
